About Us
A Mother, Daughter, and Sewing Machine
Muda New York was founded because stylish, sustainable pieces are scarce. We want to feel confident in our clothes without compromising our morals. In the spring of 2020, we did just that. I (the teen behind this all) designed hair accessories, clothes, and even hats and brought the sketches to my mom, a sewing wizard. I haven't bought new clothes (that we could make) since then. So, we decided to share our gift with the world. A dream was born right then: Muda New York.
What's in the name?
The name 'Muda' comes from Arabic, meaning style. We emphasize stylish pieces over trendy pieces, because style is forever and trends are temporary. Muda New York is a reflection of our values, history, and identity. Growing up, my mom's clothes were sewn by her. Sewing and hand crafts are integral to Egyptian culture. As an Egyptian-American, I am living proof of this, through my countless crafts since birth. Pollution is also part of Egyptian life, as of late. Walking through Cairo and even the Egyptian countryside, we have seen first-hand how climate change has disproportionately impacted BIPOC and low-income communities. As business owners, we have a responsibility to our culture and people.
Our Secret Formula
Here at Muda, we believe that we have a moral obligation to consumers and Earth. Fashion shouldn't be a question of style or ethics. We believe that sustainable fashion practices should be accessible. To support this value, we are working to digitize sewing patterns for all our items, and sell them on our Sewing page. This supports our goal of being transparent with customers, as you get to know exactly how your piece is made and make it yourself. We want you to know what's happening before and after you receive your item.
